Art Activities for Kids

So you're thinking you want to do an art project with your child. You envision looking on adoringly as he (or she) dabs delicate fingers in fingerpaint and creates a masterpiece. Perhaps a gift for Father's Day or even better: one-of-a-kind wrapping paper in which a handmade treasure will be presented.

What you might end up with is a rather brownish-gray looking thundercloud which may or may not have been applied to paper, an unexpected knock on the front door contributing to a makeover on the family dog (who in turn does his part in adding some - shall we say - accent color to your new rug in the family room) and a screaming toddler who may or may not need to visit the emergency room due to paint rubbed in the eyes.

Okay, that may be a bit dramatic, but the point is, we must have realistic expectations for children and their ability to participate in various projects and activities.

Here is a link about art that outlines a child's creative development. If you are interested in learning about the psychology of the intellectual, physical and emotional factors that play a part in this process, don't miss this read! If you're not so much interested in all of the psychological undercurrents in your child's work, you can still check it out; there's pictures!
